ABOUT

Born in 1997 Kano, Nigeria. Enoch Chinweuba is a contemporary visual artist and Illustrator from Enugu, Nigeria working as a traditional artist and illustrator professionally since 2015. He Started his artistic journey from his household contributing to professional creative work in an art-stringed family of five. Having started digitally illustrating just at the age of 10, it was almost inevitable to stray from a career as a professional artist.
Already showing high artistic qualities, in 2014 after a couple of failed attempts at college education, he decided to focus and nurture his natural talents in the fine arts by drawing portraits of his family and friends; going on to develop a career as a figurative painter and illustrator while completely being prolific at both. Through his emerging career he has been part of several international art exhibitions, part of major collections and exciting publications for his illustration work. Some of these include; Visage group show, Chilli Art Projects, London 2022. Batra Family Collection (The Great Banyan), India 2023, Collection EW, Germany 2023, Illustrations for Dubai Cares; The Write The Future Project with Okadabooks 2021. Illustration for Magnum Ice-cream ad with co-creator Barry Yusufu. 2022. Christie's Post-War and Contemporary Art Online Auction, 2022.  Artsy Foundations 2024 with Janet Rady Fineart.

“My narrative initially revolved around enlightening Africans on the effects that the history of slavery and racism has had on African people in finding cultural identity; Trying to bring to light the subtle effects of whitewashing amongst the African people, however over the years I gradually decided to drop stereotypes I believe black people are expected to live by; as I found freedom in Faith within my body of work; The Old Shack House. I now invite the world no matter how little, to join me.”

“I started the body of work "The Old Shack House" and It is likely that I would remain here for the remainder of my career as I have a strong conviction about its purpose. The Old Shack House is a place I’ve been inspired to create to contrast hope and despair; A place of Solitude, a place for rest and a place for healing; a safe place where I can talk about our collective struggles as individuals but also a place where I personally believe I became found in my relationship with Jesus, who in any case was my own personal freedom from all the stereotypes that I am expected to live and work by. The Old Shack House compels other people to do the same; heal and be free. Like almost art practices stem from personal experiences; this is no different. My paintings are a reflection of how I view the world and how I want to positively change it. I found light within the path I've been led and so I feel the responsibility to light the way behind me. This is the contagious beauty of hope."
